Putnam County Habitat for Humanity is heading back to Biloxi, Mississippi to continue the rebuild on the Gulf Coast. There will be an informational meeting January 6th at 6pm for volunteers interested in going to Mississippi February 16-22, at Habitat for Humanity, 728 E 15th St. Call 528-1711.

Leisure Services 2009 Father-Daughter Date Night will be at Leslie Town Center, beginning at 6pm, with 3 nights to choose from: Thursday, Feb. 19th; Friday, Feb. 20th; and Saturday, Feb. 21st. The cost is $25 per ticket. Registration will be Saturday, January 10th at the Cane Creek Recreation Center from 10am-2pm. Walk-in registration only, no phone calls.

Persons interested in supporting and preserving the certified athletic trainer positions at Putnam County's 3 high schools are invited to attend an organizational / strategy meeting on Thursday, Jan. 15th at 7pm at 406 East Broad St. Bring chairs. The meeting is at Republican party headquarters but is apolitical.
The Putnam County Cattlemen's Association will conduct it's Annual Membership Meeting on Friday January 16th at 6:30pm at Hyder-Burks. A complimentary beef brisket meal will be provided. The program will include : election of Board of Directors, an address by Charles Hord, the Executive Director of the Tennessee Cattlemen's Association, an address by Darrell Beason, the newly appointed NRCS District Conservationist for Putnam County, the raffle off of a black Angus heifer and bull and the award of door prizes. There will be a Used Book and Media Sale to benefit Relay For Life (American Cancer Society) at the old Peebles location in the Cookeville Mall on January 17th from 10 to 5 and on the 18th from 1 to 4. This is notice to all residents of Cookeville, that Open, Public Regular Meetings of the City Council of Cookeville will be held at the Cookeville Municipal Building, 45 East Broad St., on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6pm. The Council will also hold bi-monthly work sessions on the Monday prior to Council Meetings at Noon, unless the day is a holiday.

UCHRA CASA of Putnam County has a variety of fundraisers planned for the 2008/09 year and could use your skills and energy toward making these events successful. Proceeds go to support CASA’s (Court Appointed Special Advocates’) efforts to provide a voice for abused or neglected children who come into the court system. The Cookeville Cooperative Preschool, a non-profit organization, has openings for three and four-year-olds for the upcoming school year. Being a "co-op", parents take turn assisting teachers with crafts, circle time, snacks, and clean-up, so parents take an active role in their child's early education and social enrichment. In this time of economic stress and uncertainty, many people need help. For the fourth consecutive year, Cash Express, LLC at 402 E. 10th St. in Cookeville is collecting toys, canned food and coats for the underpriviledged. They are teaming with Genesis House to distribute the items. Anyone wishing to drop of items can do so at Cash Express, Sylvan Learning Center, Hill's IGA or Food Lion. The Upper Cumberland is in need of volunteers for State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and SMP: Empowering Seniors to Prevent Medicare Fraud. SHIP and SMP volunteers help seniors understand Medicare and find appropriate insurance coverage. They also provide education to seniors on possible fraud and abuse issues. Volunteers can contribute as much or as little time as they wish, and training is provided. If you are interested in learning about Medicare and helping older adults please consider volunteering. All UCHRA county offices are accepting LIHEAP applications between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Putnam County UCHRA is located at 3333 Williams Enterprise Drive, and the telephone number is (931) 528-1285. The LIHEAP program provides financial energy assistance to eligible low-income households one time during the year.
An account has been established at the Community Bank in Cookeville for donations to benefit the family of Aspen McCauley who is a 3 week old baby girl with meningitis. She is currently on a ventilator at Vanderbilt hospital and having lots of seizures. Any amount would be greatly appreciated.
